Red Chair Recruitment are very proud to be sponsoring Dermot on this massive project he’s taken on for the Trocaire Charity.
On Friday June 30th. 2017, on the day he retires from a long career as a primary school teacher, Dermot Higgins will set out from his home in Rush, North Co. Dublin on an epic bicycle journey of staggering endurance with two goals in mind:- To circle the entire globe, winding up where he started and at 55 years old, to become officially the oldest person in the world to so.
Dermot is a relatively new convert to cycle touring, having spent many years running, hiking and kayaking. Now, he’s about to apply to his passion to travel and see the whole world by the force of the pedals under his feet. Dermot plans to start in Madrid and cycle across Europe, into Asia via Russia, Kazakhstan and China. He then hopes to cycle along Australia’s southern coast arriving in Melbourne in time for Christmas.
Dermot will then cycle the length of New Zealand and finish by crossing the United States, flying across the Atlantic to to Portugal and finishing where he started in Madrid. The total distance is over 30,000km. and Dermot believes he can cover the distance in 9 months, averaging 160 km. per day, with one rest day every week. His aim is to finish this cycling pilgrimage in Ireland on Easter Sunday, April 1st. 2018.
As a teacher and an active environmentalist, Dermot is passionate about educating people to protect our planet. On this trip he will visit schools, projects and other organisations all over the world spreading the message of ‘The UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development’, a series of ambitious targets set and agreed by world leaders aiming to end extreme poverty, inequality and to tackle climate change. Dermot is confident about recruiting sponsors for this endeavour. He will be working in partnership with and supported by Irish Aid Organisation, Trocaire, a global charity which shares his interests and ideals. Their fundraising target is €30,000.
‘Travelling around the globe , under my own power will be my life’s ambition realised.’ said Dermot. ‘Having the opportunity to promote the Global Goals is the icing on the cake!’
